BIOGRAPHY

A functionary with positional power and a single imperative: remain relevant. The Guard stands at the gate. But a gate no one passes through is just a hole in the wall. A gatekeeper who keeps no one out is not a gatekeeper—they’re scenery. And scenery doesn’t eat.

In the magical economy, attention is survival. The Guard must guard. Must judge. Must exclude. Must make a show of it. The justification comes later. The exercise of power comes first.

ABILITIES

Checkpoint Authority (Passive) Power derives from position, not expertise. The Guard may or may not understand the craft being defended. Doesn’t matter. The Guard controls the door. But the door must be seen to be controlled.

Apologetics Shuffle (Reaction) When a failure is presented as evidence against the practice, reframe instantly. “This isn’t a vibe coding problem. It’s a data-exposure problem.” The failure is real. The attribution is contested. The appearance of clear judgment remains pure.

Psychological Dismissal (Bonus Action) Reduce any criticism to the critic’s emotional state. “Pessimists who all low-key seem worried about their careers.” The argument isn’t engaged. The arguer is diagnosed.

Show Them The Door (1/day) “Just don’t waste our time. Take it somewhere else.” Banishment. But more importantly: visible banishment. The community sees the Guard guarding. Relevance maintained.

WEAKNESSES

The Relevance Trap The Guard must exercise power to remain relevant. But exercising power requires someone to exercise it on. The Guard needs heretics. Needs doubters. Needs someone at the gate to turn away. A peaceful community with no skeptics is a community where the Guard serves no function. This leads to a need to invent relevance.

The Gatekeeping Paradox The Guard denounces gatekeeping while standing at the gate. “We’re an open community for learners”—except those who learn doubt. The justification had to be something. “Anti-gatekeeping” was available.

EQUIPMENT

  • The Mod Badge — Source of all authority. Meaningless unless used. Visibly.
  • The Pinned Ruling — The public demonstration that power was exercised. Without this, did anything happen?
  • The Helpful Alternative — A rewritten version of the offending post, showing what the Guard would have permitted. Proves reasonableness. Proves the Guard could have let them through. Chose not to.

ANALYSIS

In the magical economy, no one knows what anything means. But everyone knows who’s visible. The Guard is visible. The Guard made a ruling. The Guard exists for another day.

ENCOUNTER NOTES

Lessons: The Third Law produces magical infrastructure and magical rhetoric. Someone must stand at the gate. But the gate only matters if someone is turned away. The Guard’s survival requires heretics. The magical economy feeds the Guard what they need to feed themselves.
